Orton-Gillingham Reading Programs

If you are researching how to help a dyslexic student who struggles with reading and spelling, your research most likely will have brought you across the Orton-Gillingham approach. What exactly is Orton-Gillingham?

Orton-Gillingham is a tailored approach to teaching reading that's as unique as the individuals it serves. Named after its creators, Samuel T. Orton and Anna Gillingham, this approach focuses on a sequential, direct, explicit, multisensory, and structured technique. It's all about breaking down language barriers and building a solid foundation for fluent reading and writing.

There are numerous programs that utilize the Orton-Gillingham approach and can be used when teaching a struggling reader. Here I will list some of the more commonly used programs.

1. All About Reading/All About Spelling

All About Reading/All About Spelling (AAR/AAS) is one of the more commonly used programs for struggling readers. With its step-by-step, multisensory lessons, this program caters to various learning styles, ensuring no reader is left behind. While it does follow the Orton-Gillingham approach, those with more severe forms of dyslexia may find that it moves too quickly. I personally have had success with this program as a supplement because my children needed their instruction to be broken down even more (more than AAR breaks things down), and they also needed additional practice before moving on to new topics.

2. Logic of English

Logic of English takes Orton-Gillingham principles and teaches reading in a multisensory, logical way. This program is also quite popular with those teaching struggling readers. One major difference between Logic of English and All About Reading is that Logic of English teaches handwriting and composition, while All About Reading does not.

3. UFLI Foundations

UFLI Foundations is a rather new addition to the Orton-Gillingham-based programs. It seamlessly combines the proven methods of Orton-Gillingham with modern research, ensuring that each learner's unique needs are met.

4. Pinwheels from Rooted in Language

Pinwheels is another Orton-Gillingham based program that, like Logic of English, contains handwriting and composition instruction. One difference in this program is that you purchase a digital download, which then must be printed and organized before using.

5. Barton Reading and Spelling

If you're looking for a program with a track record of transforming reading struggles into triumphs, look no further than Barton. This Orton-Gillingham-based system provides structured, sequential lessons that address the needs of struggling readers, no matter their age. Barton was the program that was able to reach my severely dyslexic children and allow them to finally experience reading success.

Although many families choose to use one of the programs mentioned above with their struggling readers, sometimes, you need additional help or outside instruction. If that is the case, do not hesitate to hire a tutor, trained in Orton-Gillingham methods.

Orton-Gillingham is an approach to reading that has been proven to help those who struggle with reading and spelling. If your child struggles, consider one of the above options for helping them to achieve success in reading and spelling. The joy of seeing them succeed will be well worth the time and effort!
